Day 8 - Cooking

When you see my figure, you'd probably not guess how spoiled I am food-wise. Well, here's proof: Tara making biscuits (in the American sense of the word) to go with tonight's dinner. Om nom nom!

My first 365 picture that actually qualifies as a portrait!

Day 7 - Cantina Night

"Cantina night" is Mozilla's weekly week-end get-together for employees (and friends) to hang out, chat, and also play video games.

Cell phones make it hard to take photos when the lighting is a little bad, but I actually like the way the kid is burry because he's moving while playing.

Day 6 - Benches

Even in the evening sun, it is still a tiny little bit too cold to sit on these benches quite yet.

Following morgamic's advice, I stopped down three stops from my lens' maximum aperture, making the image ridiculously sharp (zoom in to check it out). I am quite pleased with the result. Only needed to straighten it a little -- apparently, when mechanical body enhancements have gone mainstream (must be any day now), I'm going to have to have a level built into my elbow.

Day 5 - Ceiling Cat is Watching You

This real-life version of a well-known Internet meme was one of the Christmas tree toppers at the Mozilla offices this past Christmas. (Anyone know who made it?). When the trees were removed, brave souls saved the toppers from what seemed to be their sealed fate and put them up on display in different spots in the office.

This is a highest-quality cellphone pic taken with Vignette, with the "toy camera" filter applied. I like the graininess and dark corners that came out as a result.

Day 4 - Scratched

How exactly did I manage to put such a deep (but short) scratch into my laptop without noticing it? Looks like something metally bumped straight into it. Strange things happening here!

Photo taken with my cell phone's cam in "macro" mode. Not bad! Next, I think I'll give Vignette for Android a shot.

Day 3 - Mozilla All-hands Meeting

The first weekly meeting in 2011. Of course, not a whole lot happened during the holidays. But there was a huge line of new hires. Welcome aboard, everyone!

This is a cellphone pic, which is probably noticeable. Nonetheless, I am actually quite pleased with its picture quality. I've seen much, much worse.

Day 2 - Wired

This weekend, I hooked up a Cisco Linksys E2000 router (upgrading from Wireless-G to 5Ghz Wireless-N). Sure enough, my laptop wouldn't consistently connect to it, so I ended up restructuring my network, and only after I installed DD-WRT on the new router did it become usable. I like the hackability of Linksys devices, but the preinstalled firmware is (and has always been) a piece of crap.

This is another pic taken at f/1.8, thus the low DOF. The white balance was highly messed up (apparently, none of the presets match my basement lights), so I fixed it after downloading the pic to the computer.

Day 1 - Mirror Pond

What a better way to end a holiday than with a sip of Oregonian beer?

For this photo, I manually picked just about everything: Aperture, shutter speed, white balance. Very fun when it turns into a nice picture afterwards :)

Day 0 - Lizzy under the couch

Under the couch is decidedly Lizzy's favorite spot in our entire house. Of course, she has trouble both getting into and out of it, but that doesn't deter her the slightest bit from getting under there whenever she can.

Taken with a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 prime lens. Cropped and lighted up the shadows a tad.

As some of you may know, lately, I've become more interested into photography again. I've been taking pictures on and off, especially when traveling, and of special events. But I haven't been actively working on improving my technique for a while.

Enter JP and morgamic, whose excellent pictures (and perhaps some lens envy) kept inspiring me to get out my camera over and over again. Just recently, I also started filling the gaps in my lens collection: I now have the ability to take pictures anywhere between 14 and 200mm focal length (before the crop factor), dramatically widening the range of pictures I can take.

So what better than a little photo project to keep the ball going? I came across Project 365, whose premise is simple: For a full year, take a picture every day and share it with your audience. All right, I'm in!

All other rules you get to pick yourself, with some people also suggesting to create some "anti-rules" as to be realistic and keep it a fun and achievable project, so here we go:

  • I'm going to do my best to take a photo a day, and upload (and blog) it somewhat close to the time I am taking it.
  • If I take a bad photo, I won't beat myself up about it.
  • This includes cell phone pictures. In fact, limitations of the equipment are probably what makes this even more fun to do.
  • If I really didn't take a picture one day, I'll fill in one from my archive. Or improvise. We'll see!

My personal goals are to increase my knowledge of photography and my ability to take good pictures -- not only with expensive equipment. So I'll try to flip settings on and off, apply filters, get closer, move further away, crop, or distort my pictures, hoping to find new and exciting ways to display reality.

Feel free to follow me on my journey, and don't be shy to comment, both positive and negative, on the photos I take.

Oh, and if you are a photographer yourself, feel free to join in on the fun! Any questions?
